Power Wagon Registry (2005 and up)
About the Power Wagon Registry
When I bought my 2005 Dodge Power Wagon in January of 2007, I quickly found out that there weren't too many resources about the 3G PWs. There weren't any dedicated forums, lists, or registries. I didn't really want to get into the business of running a forum because there are already a couple of really good Dodge forums out there like DodgeTalk.com and DodgeForum.com. I asked the folks at DodgeTalk.com to host the 3G Power Wagon Forum because I really liked their forum software. They were kind enough to set it up in short order and I set about collecting all the usernames of people on the forum who had Power Wagons. It took a few weeks, but I think I tracked them all down and contacted them to let them know about the forum. It didn't take long for it to get pretty busy there.
One of the things we'd been told by Dodge and their dealers is that Power Wagons were individually numbered with a sequential build number as the last four digits of the VIN. After trying to keep track of this in a spreadsheet, I decided to build this site to do it for me. We've since learned that there doesn't appear to be a direct correlation between the build date found inside the drivers side door and the last four of the VIN. There were a number of discrepancies found even within the 2005 model year. It got worse in the following model years. The best we can make out is that it appears to be more closely aligned to the order date, but I dont' have enough hard data as yet to back this assertion up. I plan on doing that here in the near future.
We also discovered that there isn't a unique designation within the VIN that means a truck is a Power Wagon. This was pretty disappointing to say the least. We did discover that the 2005 model year all have a "90" preceeding the last four of the VIN which doesn't happen in later model years. This might mean that for the 2005 model year, the 90 specifies a Power Wagon and the last four are the date the truck was ordered. Again, I don't have enough data yet to back this up. However, I haven't found a 2005 PW yet which did not have the "90" designation.
No matter how this pans out, I've been very, very, disappointed with Chrysler / Dodge over a number of customer support issues. Pretty much every question I asked (the sequential numbering, how many Power Wagons were made in each model year, whether Alcoa makes the wheels etc.) the answer has always been "It's proprietary information". It's very sad that Dodge can't fess up this information. I can't see how telling us how many Power Wagons were made for each year is going to give a competitor some weird advantage. Hopefully, one day, this site will be popular enough that we'll have a very good idea how many were made and to finally solve the sequential number mystery.
If you look to the right you'll see some statistics about how many have registered here, and what the highest and lowest sequential numbers have been registered here. I have yet to find a 2005 Power Wagon with a last four higher than 3,000 anywhere in my searches of the internet. I definitely believe that of all the 3G Power Wagons, the 2005 was a relatively small production run.
At any rate, if you find a 3G Power Wagon somewhere, do me a favor. Tell them about this site so they can register here and help solve the mysteries.
